As a massage therapy student, I’m on a mission to conquer the MBLEX (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination). I earned my degree in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from Michigan Technological University, so I have taken a lot of biology classes already. Becoming a massage student 25 years after university means much of the basic content is review for me. But the more detailed concepts... well, I need more help.
With the exam approaching, I believe that having a solid plan is crucial to success. I want to share my study strategies, tools, and personal stories that can help not only me but also my fellow students in navigating this significant step in our careers. By the end, I hope you'll be inspired and ready to take on the challenge.
Leverage Free Resources
One of the best resources I've discovered is the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) study app called PocketPrep. This app acts as a mini-study buddy in your pocket, offering quizzes and critical information that simplifies studying. For example, I can focus on my weakest subject, study my wrong answers, and do timed quizzes.
You can use the app on both your phone and a PC. This dual platform support means I can study whenever it fits into my day, whether sitting at home or in a classroom.

Study Daily
Studying consistently is essential for mastering the material. I set aside a least 20-30 minutes a day to focus on different topics. This approach not only makes the information more manageable but also boosts retention.
For instance, I found that spreading out study sessions helps combat the feeling of being overwhelmed. Mixing subjects, such as anatomy one day and massage techniques the next, keeps my mind engaged and prevents burnout.
Practice Quizzes Are Your Friends
Using practice quizzes proved to be one of the most effective methods for my preparation. I rely heavily on PocketPrep. The quizzes help solidify my knowledge and allowed me to feel more at ease about the test.
After each quiz, I make an effort to review not only my incorrect answers but also the correct ones. I learned to analyze each question carefully, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of anatomical terms and concepts because the MBLEX poses tricky questions sometimes to try to trip you up.
Take It Step-by-step
When I first started studying the material, it was overwhelming. Anatomy, Ethics, Business, Kinesiology, Pathology, plus so many different massage modalities... my advice? Take your time. Each time I revisit a topic after learning the basics, it feels clearer.
For topics that are difficult to grasp, spend additional time on them. It’s all about breaking down complex subjects into smaller parts. For example, when studying muscles, I find it helpful to categorize them by function and by location, which aids retention.
Lean on Your Instructors and Peers
Don’t hesitate to engage with your instructors or classmates if you're struggling with concepts. I can’t stress enough how valuable it was when I collaborate with classmates. They often provide new perspectives, personal stories, or memorable mnemonics that help clarify tricky subjects.
Working with a study group allows us to share our unique ways of remembering information, leading to breakthroughs that improve everyone's understanding.
Creatively Review Information
To reinforce my knowledge, I used flashcards and mnemonics to memorize key terms, and I created visual aids, like diagrams, models, and charts. Explaining concepts to friends and family also helped me solidify my understanding. Teaching others is one of the most effective learning strategies.
When I verbalize my knowledge, I not only reinforce what I’ve learned but also clarify my own thoughts. So, don’t shy away from getting creative; whether you prefer drawing, making charts, or using rhymes, find what works best for you.
Systematic Review
Review information systematically. The first time you encounter a topic can be overwhelming, but returning to it after gaining a foundational understanding.
Every time I revisit previous materials, I find new insights and strengthen my overall confidence. Repeating and reviewing subjects ensures the information stays fresh and understandable.
Quiz, Quiz, Quiz!
Frequent self-testing is crucial. Use flashcards, mobile apps, or paper quizzes —whatever it takes to stay engaged. Focus on your weaker subjects to feel a sense of progress as you improve.
The boost of confidence from correctly answering questions made studying feel rewarding, but remember that each wrong answer became a chance to learn. Establishing the right mindset matters, as well. So practice quizzes play a significant role in preparing me for the full MBLEX exam.
Find Inspiration
Listening to the MBLEX prep podcast was an excellent addition to my study routine. It provides insights and keeps me motivated. Podcasts can be a fantastic resource, injecting life into your study routine with new perspectives and insights.
Wrapping Up
Preparing for the MBLEX can feel overwhelming, but a well-structured plan makes it achievable. Use free resources like the AMTA PocketPrep App, make daily study a habit, and rely on quizzes to reinforce your knowledge. Remember to connect with your instructors and peers.
As we journey together toward this goal, remember that even small progress is still progress. Embrace the challenges that come your way, and soon, you’ll be looking back and marveling at how far you’ve come. Let’s conquer the MBLEX!
