Get Up Off my Massage Table Without Grunting and Ruining Relaxation

Updated: Aug 22

Let’s talk about something I often notice during my time as a massage therapy student. After a soothing session designed to melt tension away from muscles and connective tissues, some clients surprise me with a loud grunt or a herky-jerky sit-up when it’s time to leave the massage table. If this is you, I’m here to share why those actions aren’t the best way to transition and offer insight on how to exit gracefully without disrupting the relaxation we've just created.

I entered the world of massage therapy excited about what I'd learn about massage techniques, the human body, and its habits. With over 100 hours in the student massage clinic and twice as many sessions working on my friends and family, I've seen how people tend to move according to old habits. And sitting up too quickly can create a jarring effect that is the opposite of relaxation.

Why Grunting and Hoisting is Counterproductive

When you suddenly pop up from the massage table with a loud grunt and a jerky motion, you disrupt the purpose of the massage.

A good massage is about improving circulation, relaxation, flexibility, and overall range of motion. When you abruptly pull yourself up like a jack-in-the-box (BOING!), you essentially unravel all that cozy calm we've created. When you hoist yourself up, your muscles are jolted into action, countering the peace your body has just experienced.

Moreover, jolting yourself up can strain or injure your body. For example, if you've just received myofascial release on tight shoulders, a sudden jolt could cause you discomfort.

The Correct Way to Get Up

So, how should you get up off the massage table without ruining your relaxation? Here’s a simple guide:

Step 1: Roll to Your Side

First, instead of attempting a sit-up, roll onto your side. This gentle motion helps your body remain relaxed and supports spinal alignment. If you need it, grab the edge of the table for stability. This movement keeps your spine aligned and avoids jarring any tense muscles.

Step 2: Swing Your Legs Over the Edge

While still on your side, swing your legs over the edge of the table slowly. This allows your body to transition without rushing and keeps your core engaged. Take a moment to tune into how your body feels. Notice the relaxation still present in your muscles and take a deep breath.

Step 3: Gently Push Yourself Up

Finally, with your legs hanging over the side, place your hands on the edge of the table and slowly push yourself up. Avoid using excessive force. Instead, move steadily until you’re upright. Once seated, take another deep breath. Savor the lingering effects of your massage.

Relaxation Benefits of a Graceful Exit

Transitioning off the table smoothly not only helps maintain your relaxation but also teaches your body to move mindfully. This awareness can improve your overall experience. Additionally, this mindful approach shows respect for the efforts your massage therapist has put in, as well as for your own body. It's a simple yet effective way to experience the benefits of massage therapy longer.

Observing Patterns in Transitions

In my time at the clinic, I've noticed that many people tend to hoist themselves off the table energetically without awareness. This observation prompts a thought about habits we carry into many areas of our lives. Do we rush through transitions at work, in our vehicles, or even when winding down at home? These sudden movements can disrupt a sense of peace and relaxation.

Fostering Mindfulness

As a massage therapy student, my goal extends beyond helping you feel good during the session: I aim to inspire you to practice mindfulness throughout your life.

Think of this gentle method of getting up as a small challenge. How can you carry this mindfulness into your everyday life? Recognize the lingering relaxation after your massage. Consider how you can maintain that sense of calm throughout your day.

Implementing a gentle exit from the massage table allows you to reflect on how you carry yourself beyond our session, ultimately helping to nurture a better state of being.

Wrapping It Up

So, to all my future massage clients, let’s make a pact: After your next massage, please leave the grunting and herky-jerky movements behind. Instead, focus on a smooth and gentle transition that allows you to fully experience the benefits of our time together even after you walk out the door. As you return to the hustle of daily life, take those moments of relaxation with you. Remember to pause and appreciate how your body feels, allowing that mindfulness to extend beyond the massage table.

Trust me, your body will thank you.
