Last Sunday, I had the chance to spend another day on the UNLV campus, working alongside the Rebel Football team’s trainers during my internship with the UNLV Athletics Department. This internship experience has given me a fresh perspective on sports massage, which is quite different from the spa-like environment I experienced in the student clinic at the European Massage Therapy School. Being part of the team that supports these dedicated athletes has helped me understand the unique challenges and rewards of sports massage.
The Setting and Atmosphere of Sports Massage
Unlike the calm, private rooms of a typical massage clinic, the physical workspace for sports massage in the locker room is often out in the open. The day after a football game, the atmosphere can be charged with energy or chill with players hanging out. The massage area is an open training room buzzing with activity. This environment demands quick thinking and adaptability.
The head trainer leads the wellness and healing process for players. My role is simply supplementary to the trainers. I focus on improving circulation through flushing techniques and helping with flexibility within tight muscles or fascia. I’m not there to diagnose or treat injuries, I leave that responsibility to the trainers. Instead, my work supports the athletes’ recovery and performance readiness.

Watching for Injuries and Adjusting Techniques
One of the biggest differences I noticed is the importance of monitoring for injuries like sprains, strains, bruises, and open wounds. These are common the day after a football game. I have to stay alert and communicate closely with the trainer team to so that the massage supports healing without causing harm.
Another difference that sports massage has from spa-like massages is that athletes often have a better-than-average understanding of their own bodies compared to the average non-athlete. They know where they feel tightness or discomfort and what they need to perform at their best. This means I have to listen carefully and adjust my techniques based on their feedback and the trainer’s guidance. Adaptability and empathy in approach is key.

Maintaining Professional Boundaries in a High-Energy Environment
Working with competitive athletes means navigating a highly emotional and sometimes glamorous environment. I can see how it might be easy to get caught up in the excitement of the games or the star power of the players. Fortunately, I’m not a football fan, so I don’t follow the latest stats or stars, which helps me stay grounded and out of any drama.
Sports massage therapists must maintain clear verbal and nonverbal boundaries. Respecting personal space while avoiding any behavior that could be misinterpreted is essential. Staying focused on the athlete’s physical needs and maintaining professionalism helps build trust and ensures a safe environment for everyone in the locker room.
What I’ve Learned from My Experience with the UNLV Rebels
This internship has taught me that sports massage is about more than just relaxation. It’s a targeted, purposeful practice that supports athletes in managing the physical demands of their sport. The work requires attentiveness to adapting conditions, flexibility, and a strong sense of professional ethics.
Here are some key takeaways from my internship with UNLV Rebels Football so far:
The environment is dynamic and public, requiring quick adaptation and clear communication.
Athletes have a deep awareness of their bodies, so listening and adjusting techniques is crucial.
Collaboration with trainers is essential to ensure safe and effective care. I can learn a lot from these expert trainers.
Maintaining professional boundaries protects both therapist and athlete in a high-energy setting.

Why Sports Massage Matters for Athletes and Clients
For potential sports massage clients, understanding these differences can help set expectations. Sports massage is not about pampering; it’s about supporting physical performance and recovery. Whether you’re an athlete or someone interested in this type of massage, knowing the focus on circulation, flexibility, and injury prevention can guide your choices.
If you want a massage experience that helps your body recover from intense activity or prepares you for physical challenges, sports massage offers unique benefits. Working with trained professionals who understand the demands of your sport or activity ensures you get targeted care that supports your goals. This internship has been an eye-opening journey into the world of sports massage. It’s a rewarding field that requires skill, awareness, and respect for the athlete’s needs. I feel lucky (🍀 luckygirliegirl!) to gain this experience and look forward to applying what I’ve learned to help others achieve their best physical health.
