Celebrating Mental Health at ABF's 5th Annual Hike n' Heal Event

Every year, the Avery Burton Foundation's (ABF's) Hike n' Heal event brings together people who care deeply about mental health and the outdoors. This year marked the 5th annual gathering at the Historic Railroad Pass Trail in Boulder City, and once again, my family and I joined in. After five years serving as a board member for the Avery Burton Foundation, this was my first time attending as a participant rather than a board member. Between my sports massage internship with the UNLV Football team, opening my new massage studio, and caring for two pre-teens, I needed to step back from board duties. Stepping down from the board was necessary, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to support the event. I was glad our family could support this important event and connect with our community.

The Historic Railroad Pass Trail offers some of the best hiking views in Vegas.

Being part of the Avery Burton Foundation has been a meaningful chapter in my life. The foundation focuses on raising awareness about mental health, a cause that hits close to home for many of us. This year, attending as a non-board member, I could fully immerse myself in the experience without the responsibilities of organizing. It reminded me why this event matters so much: it’s not just about hiking or fundraising. It’s about building a community that values mental health as much as physical health.

Why Hiking Matters for Mental Health

Hiking is one of the best ways to improve mental well-being. The Historic Railroad Pass Trail offers some of the best hiking views in Vegas. It is a peaceful environment that encourages mindfulness. Being outdoors, breathing fresh air, and moving your body can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. For those wondering what to do in Las Vegas beyond the usual entertainment, hiking at spots like Railroad Pass is a perfect option. It’s accessible, family-friendly, and supports mental health in a natural way.

Tips for Staying Balanced and Connected

If you prioritize your mental health and wellness, here are some practical ways to stay involved and balanced:

  • Choose activities that nourish both body and mind. Hiking is a great example, especially on trails known for their beauty and accessibility.

  • Set realistic goals for volunteering. It’s okay to step back when life gets busy but find smaller ways to contribute.

  • Connect with local non-profits. They often have events or opportunities that fit different schedules.

  • Prioritize self-care. Staying fit and balanced helps you support others better.

  • Engage your family. Activities like Hike n' Heal are perfect for involving kids and teaching them about mental health.

Looking Ahead

The 5th annual Hike n' Heal event was a good reminder that mental health matters. Our family’s participation, even in a different role this year, reinforced the importance of community and connection. If you’re looking for something to do in Las Vegas that supports your well-being, consider exploring the Historic Railroad Tunnels or getting involved with a local non-profit.

Mental health is part of overall health. Staying active, balanced, and connected helps us all thrive. I encourage you to find your own way to support this cause, whether through hiking, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness.

Health is wealth. Stay fit. Stay balanced. Stay connected.
