Hot Stones That Melt Your Muscles

3 min read

Hot stone massage sounds indulgent and soothing and all warmy. And it is! The weight and warmth of a smooth basalt stone working into tired muscle is deeply settling. My clients really love it.

Las Vegas Massage Using Hot Stones

Certain clients LOVE to include hot stones into every treatment session. Many describe a deep relaxation, and plenty just say they love the warmth. Hot stones come with your massage at no extra charge. I prep lots of tools and use them as needed (or requested) as part of your Las Vegas Myofascial Swedish massage session with me.

I'm the kind of therapist who needs to understand the "why" behind everything I do. Evidenced-based massage therapy is what I use in my Las Vegas massage practice so I've studied safety protocols carefully, and I want to share what responsible hot stone work looks like and why it matters.

As an ABMP member, I follow the organization's Hot Stone Risk Management guidelines. They're worth knowing about as a client, too. Because when you understand what your therapist is doing on your behalf, the session feels more meaningful and it's easier to speak up and advocate for yourself if something feels off.

Temperature Matters Most

Purchasing a proper hot stone kit right out of the gate was important to me when I opened my massage practice. I didn't want to use a crock pot full of water or an electric grill plate (those are for food, yo!). So I heat the stones in a hot-stone warmer and monitor that throughout the session with the attached digital thermometer. I never use stones above 130˚F (industry standards recommend a water bath temperature for full-body hot stone massage is between 120°F and 135°F). Here's how I think about the range:

Warm - 110˚F

Hot - 120˚F

Too Hot - 135˚F

Anything hotter than 130˚F and I won't use it.

Not on Bare Skin, Never Underneath You

I know that all of the photos for hot stones show glowing skin with stones arranged artfully (see attached photo with artfully arranged stones. lol). But I place hot stones only on clients who are draped with a thick sheet between the stone and the skin. That layering lets the heat reach you comfortably without burning. As the stones cool down back to room temp, however, I might place a cooled stone directly into the palm of your hand. You'll never lie on top of a stone, etiher. Body weight pressing on a hot stone is a no-no because it's a burn risk. I take safety very seriously.

Your health history comes first

I do a thorough intake before every session, and for hot stone work it carries extra weight. Contradicators for hot stones are conditions such as:

  • Cardiovascular & Circulatory Issues

  • Pregnancy

  • Skin Conditions

  • Autoimmune Diseases

  • Bloodthinner Medications

  • Chemotherapy or Radiation Treatments

  • Aged or Thinned Skin

  • Young or Timid Clients - They may feel too nervous to communicate if the temperature feels too hot

You'll fill out a health history form so I can check that nothing on it rules hot stones out during your massage treatment. I also screen for acute situations: a fever of 100˚F or higher, vomiting, a cold or acute systemic condition, an injury that needs medical attention, or intense or unexplained symptoms like a sudden, piercing headache. Those are signs your body is already dealing with something, and it needs no extra heat stress on top. If any of that applies on the day of your appointment, tell me and we'll adjust your session.

ABMP requires these protocols as a condition of my liability insurance coverage for hot stone massage, and I think that's a reasonable expectation. Therapists who skip the intake form, skip the thermometer, or decide a stone that's a little too hot will be fine if they keep it moving are the reason these guidelines exist. I follow them because I believe in them, and because my clients are brave enought to trust me with their bodies. That trust is the whole job: Do No Harm.
